Enhancing Paraprofessional Effectiveness Through Structured Evaluation

Paraprofessionals play an essential role in today’s education system, serving as the backbone of effective classroom instruction and student support. They work alongside teachers to implement lessons, manage classroom procedures, and provide individualized assistance to students, including those with special needs or English language learners. Their contributions are critical to ensuring that every student has the guidance, attention, and support needed to thrive.

In our continuous effort to improve instructional support and student outcomes, our school has implemented a structured paraprofessional evaluation form for the 2025-26 school year. This tool is designed not only to provide clear performance feedback but also to strengthen the collaboration between teachers and paraprofessionals. This framework ultimately helps enhance the learning experience for every student.

A Structured Approach to Evaluation

The evaluation form is organized into four key domains:

  1. Planning and Lesson Support: Paraprofessionals review and communicate regularly with teachers, actively implement lesson plans, and adapt teaching aids to enhance student learning. To achieve this, we have assigned each paraprofessional to one teacher or at most one subject. This allowed them to have the same prep times as the teachers and focus on one subject area.
  2. Classroom Management and Support: They assist in managing classroom dynamics, support enforcement of rules, and help organize activities and materials. Although this is nothing new and widely accepted, the collaboration between the teacher and paraprofessional has become more evident after introducing this new evaluation structure.
  3. Student Engagement and Specialized Support: Paraprofessionals engage students in activities, provide individualized support for Students with disabilities and English Language Learners. By becoming a part of the entire process, paraprofessionals begin to monitor progress, and collaborate with teachers to modify lessons to meet diverse needs.
  4. Professionalism and Communication: This includes demonstrating professionalism, attending training, integrating feedback, communicating effectively with teachers, and reliably performing assigned duties. At the start of the year, both teachers are paraprofessionals and have gone through a comprehensive training to set forth the expectations, clarify roles and responsibilities to increase efficiency.

Impact and Outcomes

Since implementing this new evaluation structure, we have seen measurable improvements in paraprofessional effectiveness. Teachers report smoother classroom management, more engaged students, and enhanced lesson delivery. Paraprofessionals themselves appreciate the clarity of expectations and the opportunity to receive actionable feedback, leading to increased confidence and professional growth.

A Model for Collaboration

This structured evaluation does more than assessing performance; it fosters a culture of collaboration, accountability, and professional development. By clearly defining roles, expectations, and avenues for growth, paraprofessionals and teachers work together more effectively, creating a more supportive and dynamic learning environment for students.

Conclusion

Investing in the growth and development of paraprofessionals benefits the entire classroom. Our evaluation structure provides a framework that supports continuous improvement, strengthens teacher-paraprofessional partnerships, and ultimately helps all students achieve their full potential. We look forward to continuing this practice and sharing our successes with the broader educational community.
