This year, I took a trip to El Yunque Rainforest in Puerto Rico. Like any curious teacher, I couldn’t help noticing all the fascinating environmental displays and educational panels at the visitor center. As I snapped photos of the exhibits—covering everything from deforestation to conservation successes—I started thinking: How can I bring this real-world experience back to my AP Environmental Science (APES) students?
That’s where ChatGPT came in.
🧠 From Field Experience to Classroom Assignment
When I returned, I didn’t want to just tell my students about what I saw. I wanted them to investigate the actual information themselves, as scientists and environmental thinkers.
Instead of a generic worksheet, I aimed for an authentic inquiry-based assignment:
✅ Students analyze real-world primary sources (my photos from the information center).
✅ They explore human impacts—negative (deforestation, invasive species, climate change) and positive (research, conservation, education).
✅ They practice critical thinking by proposing sustainable solutions.
🔎 Steps I Followed (That You Can Too)
Here’s exactly how I did it — and how you can repeat the process for your own subject and field trips:
Step 1: Capture Real-World Content
-
I took photos of all educational materials, displays, and infographics at the rainforest’s information center.
Step 2: Upload & Organize
-
I uploaded the images to ChatGPT in batches (about 10 at a time to keep it manageable).
Step 3: Collaborate with ChatGPT
-
I asked ChatGPT to:
-
Analyze the text and visuals in the photos.
-
Identify key environmental and human impact themes.
-
Help me brainstorm how students could analyze these photos like primary sources.
-
Step 4: Design the Assignment
-
ChatGPT helped me create:
-
An Image Analysis Chart for students.
-
A Reflection Prompt to synthesize their findings.
-
Higher-order discussion questions.
-
An Exit Ticket for assessment.
-
(And it even offered to create a grading rubric and a Google Doc version!)
-
Step 5: Facilitate & Engage
-
In class, students worked through the analysis, reflected, and discussed real-world solutions.
-
The result? Deeper engagement and stronger connections between classroom learning and the real world.
💡 Why This Matters
By using ChatGPT as a creative collaborator, I:
-
Saved hours of prep time.
-
Created an assignment that was personalized and meaningful.
-
Offered my students a chance to engage with authentic, real-world data.
ChatGPT isn’t just a tool for quick answers. It’s a creativity partner for teachers.
Whether you have travel photos, museum visits, scientific data, or historical sources, you can turn them into meaningful, authentic assignments that make learning come alive.
